February 15, 2011; (Orlando, Fla.) ― Dana Loncar, a senior account executive at Consensus Communications, recently presented to the Orange County Board of County Commissioners on behalf of the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida and won approval of funding for the new Men’s Service Center.
As Chairman of the Board for the Coalition, Dana’s goal is to raise awareness of the homeless in our community and encourage support for their needs. The Coalition is the largest provider of homeless services in Central Florida and the largest residential facility for children. Last year, the Coalition: • Provided over 209,000 nights of shelter to men, women and children • Delivered more than 302,000 meals • Housed about 600 people on a given night • Supported 374 families with 690 children • Benefited from almost 17,000 volunteers
Dana’s presentation won approval of an agreement between Orange County, Florida, the City of Orlando, and the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, Inc. regarding Community Development Block Grant funding. The collaborative effort will create a residential program to help get men off the street, into a stable environment, and on the road to stability and independence.
The project is a new Men’s Service Center (MSC), a 32,000 sq. ft. residential facility to house 250 men. The MSC residential program will fill a critical service void in the community and address the unique needs of chronically homeless men. The MSC will help men develop the personal and financial stability needed to become self-sufficient, thereby breaking the cycle of homelessness.
Coalition for the Homeless is the largest provider of homeless services in Central Florida and the largest residential facility for children. On a given night, the Coalition provides services to nearly 200 children. Their average age is six years old. Over 70 percent of its resources come from individuals, businesses, faith-based groups, and other private sector sources. The organization is guided by a 42-member Board of Directors.
